I am horrible about going to the grocery store on any kind of reasonable schedule

I buy meat in bulk and freeze it. I keep a ton of dry goods and canned foods and frozen goodies (aka "stoner food".) If I run out of bread I always have flour and yeast and can bake some when I want it. I buy a ton of different cheeses whenever I do make it to the store, and they keep for ages. I do run in and pick up milk whenever I run out, ( Read more... )

Not to be overly discouraging, but my experience with CSA delivery is that when my roommate was getting it, they would deliver a box of produce every other week, and then at least half of it would rot in the refrigerator because she didn't have time to look up recipes and figure out what to do with the fuckload of rhubarb or whatever they sent her.

So I would suggest starting off with the smallest size, and if they let you choose what to get, stick with things you already know how to prepare. Experimenting with weird new veggies can be fun, but it might not be something you have time for on a regular basis.

This was my experience as well. You never know what you'll get, how much, or how often. We got some strange and difficult-to-eat products, sometimes several times in a row and were not really sure what to do with it all. You will be presented with some new foods which can be fun and interesting.

Give it a try - small, mixed boxes at first like she sez.

I agree with both comments above. Get stuff you will eat, tailor the boxes to what you want to use and will use, and make sure you have time to actually cook. We often get stuff that ends up going bad before I figure out what to do with it, or am just too busy. But, if you are a creative and adventuresome cook it can be an inspiration to experiment. I am making mushroom soup right now using ingredients mostly from my CSA box, mainly because they needed to be used up. I have been known to go to websites where you can plug in ingredients and get recipe suggestions based on those ingredients to find ways to use what I got in my box ( ... )

I use Farm Fresh to You and I love them. Ian and I find the box a fun challenge. We now eat veggies we never ate before. We get a regular box every two weeks and most of the time we use it up. Sometimes we don't, but then sometimes we let grocery-store food go to waste, too.

I get the UCD Student Farm one, so no real recommendations on other ones. But I will say it's taught me ways to use things I wasn't always fond of. I end up with greens in everything and have learned what I should likely freeze because I won't use it before it goes bad. But I'm eating way more vegetables than I once did (which sounds kind of odd from a vegetarian).

Mind you, I still toss or donate most of the turnips. I'm working on finding a dish I like them in. And my tolerance for eggplant only goes so far.

Go for it. I had Farm Fresh for quite a while. but I also agree with all the previous comments. The real trick I found was to get all teh veggies ready to cook the day it comes in. Chopping freezing, whatever, so when you want to use it you just have to grab it and go. Or just go with all fruit!
