In case you didn't know, the hayrack is to be used for decorative purposes only. All hay actually put in the hayrack will be promptly removed, eventually flattened, and used as a toilet.
Hay is yummiest when squooshed onto the ground and pooped on.
A corollary to this is that only NEW hay in the cage is worth eating. Every morning I put 3 strands of hay on top of the hay pile, and they all charge into the hay that has been there THE ENTIRE NIGHT to eat it like little goblins.
Sometimes I'll just ruffle through the hay, and all 3 of them will come running to eat it, even if I haven't actually added anything. Pity that the same technique doesn't work for humans and leftovers. :)
