inkytwist gave me some food for thought, and it's not something K and I have really discussed. Will the girl go as Gwen or Gwendolyn? Are there even any other nicknames for Gwendolyn?

A cursory Google search shows the following: "A given name in its own right, Gwen is also a nickname for Gwendolen, Gweneira, Gwenllian and many other Welsh names for ( Read more... )

hahaha - you promised you wouldnt do this? You obviously didnt have kids yet ;)

You can only go so far as to controlling the nicknames you know. Floyd's family friends had this hilarious story about how they hated the nicknames that end in -ey so they purposely gave their kids names that wouldnt shorten that way because everyone nicknamed THEM "Davey and Patty" - so they named their kids Rachel, Jake, and Alexis. And they now go by? Rachey, Lexie, and Jakey. hahahaha

My favorite nicknamed kid's name was Boo. Oh, and Scoobie.

At some point, when the little ones start getting more personality, those names will sort of attach themselves on their own too. At this early stage, they're all fusspots.

"That's about it. I promised I wouldn't do this, all I'm doing is talking about this child. :/ She hasn't even DONE anything yet."

It's a lot to process and it needs to be said. The birth of the child is the birth of the parent. Congratulations, your world has just been turned upside down. Embrace it and enjoy the ride!

I don't know how it is for daddies, but for mommies, one day, you wake up, get everyone dressed and out the door, and it isn't even 11:00 yet. You step out into the world, blink, and say, "Where have I been?" And then you realize that, somehow, this new normal feels normal.

P.S. Pediatrician and psychotherapist D.W. Winnicott called that three-month fog after a baby is born "primary maternal preoccupation," and said if it wasn't normal, it'd be pathological. -- emil
