Recipes for a man who is basically alone in his life, Issue #1

Aug 18, 2009 21:14

Joanna and I broke up, most of my friends moved away, and I live alone in a small apartment with a tiny, empty kitchen. Now that there is nobody around to make food for me, I have been on a hunt for very simple recipes that someone with no cooking experience and no access to human supervision or companionship can make. Bonus points if the dish is ( Read more... )

aw, I'm sorry to hear about you and J. I would love to sit in a room adjacent to you and consume buffalo wings and alcohol in companionable solitude.

It's a Patton Oswalt quote.

I am okay. Going out a lot to keep myself non-isolated. It was an amicable breakup, which I think is better than a fire-and-brimstone breakup by any standard. Thanks for asking.

My favorite, simple entree. It's my own invention.

Soopageek's World Famous Mayonnaise Chicken

Coat entire chicken breast with mayonnaise and sprinkle generously with Lawry's brand seasoning salt on both sides. IMO, you cannot use too much of either ingredient. Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

I usually make this a meal with Velveeta Shells and Cheese and a canned veggie. There are other brands of seasoning salts, but I think Lawry's tastes the best for this dish.

Soop, that looks amazing. I'm going to try it ASAP and report back.

Didn't I bug you like a year ago to keep going with your "Cooking for Guys" series? Also: where the hell are you on the Internet these days?

Yeah let me know how you like it. Ahh, the Cooking For Guys series.... yeah I really dropped the ball on that. I dunno, after the whole kitchen hardware post I just lost interest in it I guess. That entry was so tedious that I felt I kinda lost the spirit of what I wanted to write, so I never finished it.

As for where the hell I am, I can also be found on Facebook in addition to the occasional LJ entry.

Wow, what a big change from living with what seemed like a lot of people. As someone who's lived alone for a long time (and now prefer it), I can still remember how jarring that initial getting-used-to period can be ( ... )

These look great, thanks for sharing them. I am going to eat the hell out of this food.

My early salad experiments failed miserably - it turns out that certain toppings just don't go with others. For example: kidney beans and dried cranberries, although they are the same color, are FUCKING AWFUL together. I'll give this one a shot though because it looks delicious.

I like your adorably child-like idea that same color=delicious!

Easy salads:
Cucumber, halved and then halved again (quartered?). Tomatoes cut however you want. Mix some hummus with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dresing. Top with goat cheese and/or walnuts.

Spinach. Put some brie and strawberries on top. Trader Joe's raspberry vinaigrette for dressing (this one is also great as a wrap).

Super Easy Garlic Bread:
Freeze some freeze. Rub a garlic clove on it. Toast it.
