behind the cut, a very very brief look into the characters of the book I'm writing. This scene will occur when the actual attack happens. I just scribbled this in my notebook during ethology, so it is a very rough, very first draft, but it's written nonetheless, so here ya go.

just a brief, the characters are Lana, her little sister Carisa, Lana's best friend Mona, and their male friends Damascus (Dama) and James. I realize I have given no background on this story at all yet in here, but for the few people that know what it's about, here's some reading material. It's a kind of sci-fi story, but more futuristic, and it takes place on the earth in 2189, basically after the entire world has ended. A few thousand people remain and this small college-aged group have recently discovered their destiny. Anyway, here ya go.

Lana lifted her eyes from her manual, placing the little book on the table before her. A vision had flashed behind her eyes briefly, and her mind was rushing forward. Adreneline pumped through her, making her entire body shake, and as she stared at the ceiling and watched the tiles begin tremble, she smelled a strange acidity in the air, a smell she recognized from her childhood; that smell you get when you crush an ant between your fingers...

Damascus woke from his nap with a start. A foreign sensation formed goosebumpbs on his bare chest, and he grabbed a thermal shirt, reacting unconciously to the undeniable cold embracing him. Standing, he began to bounce on his toes, alert. The ground transitioned from a gentle tremble to a violent quake, and he fell to his knees, reaching out to grab the long rod he kept near his bed, and preparing his mind for battle...

The room James sat in became suddenly warmer. He stopped typing and grabbed the drink beside him, taking a huge swig and looking out the window beside him - a shadow in the distance was approaching, moving far faster than a human could but seemed about the size of a human, if strangely distorted. He stood, and the ground bucked beneath him. As it did, a large wooden sign fell from his wall and struck his head, and he dropped to the ground, his eyes closing, just as a loud shriek began to resonate through the room...

Mona covered her ears to a high-pitched shriek. Her baby brother looked up at her from her arms, and Mona held him close, trying to cover his ears from the horrible sound. The blood in her veins ran faster as her heart beat wildly in response. Scanning the dim sky outside, she saw nothng. She sighed gently in relief, knowing in her mind that any danger was sure to come from above. Her eyes dropped to the horizon and she gasped audibly, biting her lip - as she watched, strange figures were rising from the ground...

Carisa heard her sister jumping around in the room beside her when the screeching began. To Carisa, it was more of a wail, an exhalation of some strange agony, a release. Carisa picked up the small blade she kept in her desk - it was basically a boxcutter, but all she had at the moment - and slipped it into her sturdy shoes.
"We're ready for you," she muttered, before exiting her room and jogging to her sister's and banging on the door.

Lana
Lana's feet wouldn't stop moving. She opened the door for Carisa, loading into a pack a large blade she had collected from the kitchen when this had all began, and the strange box her father had given them, which she had yet to open. Carisa helped her sister throw some needed items into the bag, including the crystals given to them by their father, before Lana slipped her feet into her sandals and took a deep breath.
"Carissa, we need to go get Dama. And everyone else. Bring your phone, and get James. I'll collect Mona and Damascus."
Carisa agreed and started into a slow jog out the door as Lana steped into the twilight. Her skin immediately felt like it was crawling. What was this feeling? What was that shriek which would not stop? It was like the earth was crying, or bellowing in warning. Lana kneeled on the dirt, pressing her palms against the shuttering ground, and found the soil almost too hot to touch. She stood up, and below her feet, the ground began to rise.
Jumping back, Lana watched as something broke through the ground like a blade of grass in fast-forward - a huge, arm-like appendage, with a three fingered hand. The hand was wider than Lana's waiste, and she fell back trying to find her footing. Moving away from the strange appendage, she watched the arm, followed by a second, lift a hideous figure from beneath the dirt. The arms were six feet long, but the body, including a strange, flattened head, was about three feet highg. As it emerged from the ground, the creature lifted all of it's weight onto it's hands. It's long legs dragged on the ground, rendered useless behind in. The creature's arms moved without the usual fluidity - the jerking motions were terrifying. Lana shuddered, looking away briefly, before finding it impossible to take her eyes off of the creature...

I wrote more but that's all for now. I know, I know, it's silly. Go with it, it will/does get better. =)

the ennnnd.
