The Passing of the Golden Queen of Pern

I just learned that Anne McCaffrey has died, or perhaps just gone between for the last time. I "met" her dragons when I was fourteen and fell madly in love. Those books, and many others of her crafting, gave me hours of joy and tears and escape--along with a great desire for a dragon, or at least a fire lizard, of my own. I hadn't heard the sad news, but I too embarked on many happy journeys to Pern! She'll be missed!

Amazing books. Audrey has just been rereading them on her Kindle. The Ship Who Sang was my first experience of her writing; I'll never forget it.

My progression was Norton, McCaffrey, McKinley, and on to Cherryh, LeGuin, and hosts of others. But Norton got me for sheer far-flung storytelling, McCaffrey for scope, before loosing me on the genre. Whatever issues I had with her characters later on, she propelled me breathless onward. If I have a gravestone, it wll read "Too toothless old to flame, too slow to get between". (Either that, or "I TOLD you I was sick!")

I'm so sorry to hear that she's passed. I've never read the Pern books, but I adored her Crystal Singer series and thought it was just fantastic. Like you, I spent hours in that world, and her heroine (whose name I've forgotten, which seems like a good reason to find those books again) inspired a confused, lonely young adult to be a strong woman.

As a lover of books who's lost some of her favorite authors, I completely empathize with your loss, hon.

*hugs*
