I'd been meaning to read The Hunger Games trilogy for a while and finally got around to it this week, just ahead of the release of the first movie (which I may or not go see at the theatre). I had a really strong reaction to it and wondered if any of you guys on my flist have read it and what you thought ( Read more... )

Is thatgirlsix on your flist? I know she posted about this trilogy the other day and had a really strong (and I think, she suspected, unpopular) reaction to it... You might wanna get in touch with her and have a yarn about it. *smish*

I've been more on the fence about these books--to read or not to read--than anything that come out in years and this post perfectly describes why. It's sort of post-apocalyptic, or at least dystopian, right? I think we've talked before about how I have such a love-hate relationship with that sort of story. I'm attracted to and fascinated by them, but I have real psychological issus with that type of story, too. As in the type of depression you're describing here, and even recurring nightmares.

On the other hand, I've probably heard more recs of this series than of anything in years, both on LJ and in RL, the latter being more unusual. (Of course the last two things people I know in RL recced were Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey, so I'm not very inclined to trust their judgment.)

Also, yes...Dragons is right about Six having posted about these books a while ago, but I didn't read the post either, having thought I might want to read them unspoiled.

Also, hi!

I've read them. Loved them! Gave copies as Christmas gifts to the young women on my short gift-giving list.

I mean, "Team Gale" and "Team Peeta" so misses the point. Or maybe it just illustrates the point. Sigh... yes. It would be awesome to have the books actually explored in high school English classes, wouldn't it?

In fact, you make me long for a book club where I could sit and discuss this trilogy with friends. Maybe compare it to The Book Thief and talk about looking at our society thru the lens of historical fiction vs. fantasy...

I've read the first one and loved it. I have the trilogy, but I've heard so much from friends about how emotionally affecting the last two are, I haven't quite got the courage up to read them. I will though. I may have to do it on a weekend, in bright sunlight, with the sounds of happy children and possibly pleasant music playing in the background. Not a dark-at-noon winter kind of read, from all I've heard.
