A/N: New to writing "Lost" fic! Would love to know what you think!!
Charlie was dead...
This was the only thing that ran through Hurley's mind as he wondered the camp.
His friend was dead...
...except, shouldn't he be happy? They were going to be rescued...
It shouldn't have been a bittersweet relief. What should have been a happy moment shouldn't have filled him with such dispair.
Wandering over to Claire and Charlie's shared tent, Hurely stared aimlessly down at the remnants of Charlie's belongings: a backpack, a few blankets, bonoculars, and several empty water bottles....
...nothing that would mean anything to remember Charlie by...
...until the corner of a piece of paper sticking slightly out of the backpack's opening caught his eye.
Without wasting a second, Hurely snatched it up, and felt his throat go dry: It was a letter...
...written by Charlie.
Dear Whoever finds this: Please give this to my brother Liam.
Dear Liam:
I miss you...
..I wish that we hadn't drifted apart.
I want you to know that I had to do this.
I had to give my life for her....for us...for them.
Know that I would have died from the addiction if I had never come to this island.
...I never would have found Claire.
What matters most is that I could have let this experience kill me...
...but I didn't. I chose to get better. This Island saved me from myself...it saved my life.
I learned how to love on this Island, Liam.
Now I know why you stopped being a rock star, and started living in "the Real World".
You did it for your wife and daughter.
I want you to know that I have learned how to become a father, Liam...
...even when the child isn't my own. I love Aaron as though he were my flesh and blood.
I want you to be proud and know that I did this not out of selfishness, but for the greater good.
Love,
your one and only brother,
Charlie Hieronymous Pace
By the time he finished reading, Hurely could barely see. He knew now what his first mission would be once he was rescued: Find Liam Pace and deliver Charlie's letter.
Hurley smiled knowingly up at the sky; he knew that, somehow, Charlie had sent him alone to do the task.
He now felt some sense of purpose, and it was a strangely satisfying feeling to be given a sense of purpose from a dead man.
"Thank you, Charlie," Hurely whispered hoarsely to the infinite blue, feeling unexpectedly comforted by the warmth of the afternoon sun.
