» Fitting in: works as a receptionist at a mortuary. It reminds her of the Underworld and of her beloved river.
» History: The river Styx formed the boundary between the Underworld and the world of the living and the goddess Styx was the primordial goddess who represented that river. She was the only female river goddess and one of the Oceanids, married to Pallas with whom she had four children: Bia, Kratos, Nike and Zelus.
When the younger gods fought against the Titans Styx sent her own children to help Zeus, as per her father's instructions. She was the first of all the immortals to do so and in return for this, her children were allowed forever to live with Zeus and Styx herself became the divinity by whom the most solemn oaths were sworn. Anyone swearing such an oath had to drink from her ice cold waters to bind their vow, and violating such an oath resulted in the loss of immortality.
Not much else is known of Styx, other than how she was "loathed even by the immortals: dreaded Styx, eldest daughter of Okeanos. And apart from the gods she lives in her famous palace which is overroofed with towering rocks, and the whole circuit is undergirded with silver columns, and pushes heaven." Hesiod, Theogony 775
» Personality: Unlike the river she represents, Styx is not hateful. She is a shy and reserved woman but that doesn't mean she's a pushover. When she knows what she wants she will work hard to achieve it but unfortunately there's not that much left in the world she'd be interested in, other than her family or friends. A life spent in the Underworld has left her socially awkward and somewhat of an outsider and even though she tries to be social at times it just doesn't seem to work out for her, so she gives up and withdraws herself again. Styx is a bit sullen and slightly antisocial and prefers the company of her family above all others. She needs a lot of time and quiet to herself as well.
Polite and distant would be the first words that come to mind when describing her. She isn't the type to initiate conversation unless she feels like she has something important to say, but will gladly engage in one if approached first. Styx's aloof nature sometimes leads to her saying something that might be considered to be odd or otherwise completely unrelated to the matter at hand. She likes to get things done in a timely fashion and does not tolerate tardiness from anyone. She's calm and not easily angered but her tolerance has it's limits. When angered she distances herself and doesn't like to take part in any kind of confrontation unless she feels it's necessary, or if her family or friends are attacked. Then she can be very brave and she will defend her loved ones to her last breath.
Styx is also a very rule-oriented person and expects others to behave the same way. If there's something she hates more than anything in the world, it's got to be people who are untrustworthy. To Styx there's nothing worse than breaking one's promise and she will most likely never ever forgive you for that. Pallas is an exception, of course. She is still deeply in love with him and would never betray or hurt him in any way. Styx would give anything to keep him happy and by her side, and even if he'd ever betray her trust, she would mourn for a long time but would forgive him easily. Styx can be possessive of Pallas and loves how he brings out the little minx in her. She is very forward with him at times, no matter how unladylike that might be.
Gloomy and pessimistic are also good words to describe her. She enjoys the darker things in life and will gladly sleep through the day, doing her best to avoid the bright daylight. Happy, cheerful people make her feel drained and she prefers to keep contact with people like that to a minimum. Even though she is a bit reclusive she always has time for family and friends and she will never turn any of them away if they need something. She's a very caring and loving friend and mother and will gladly do whatever it is her loved ones require from her.
She can be very courageous when needed and will stand up for what she believes in, and she is a very loyal friend and ally. While she might not be the first to rush into battle, she will be on the sidelines, supporting anyone who shares her beliefs.
» Sample Journal: What is this place? Why am I here and not in the Underworld? The bright sun hurts my eyes. And the colors and noises! They seem neverending. Is there no way for me to get a bit of peace and quiet here?
Pallas, my love, are you here? And our children, have you heard from them? Please, dearest. I need you.
» Sample Roleplay: The beeping of the alarm clock was relentless and no matter how hard she tried to ignore it and cling to the remnants of the dream she'd just been having, Styx couldn't ignore the cursed sound. With a sigh she opened her eyes, only to be greeted by the harsh morning light. 8 am, again. Oh, how she hated these early mornings! And the sun, the cursed sun. It seemed to mock her more and more every morning.
Sitting up on the bed she turned off the alarm and stretched her arms up above her head. The familiar popping of the joints of her shoulders was oddly soothing and she felt a small smile creeping on her face. Coffee. She needed coffee, lots of it. That wonderfully bitter drink must have been the best invention of the modern man, she'd decided this during her first week here. No one would have cared about ambrosia had they had a taste of coffee, of this she was sure.
She made her way to the small kitchen to put the coffee on before returning to make the bed. Styx had already become a slave to many routines and sometimes she felt like they were the only things keeping her sane in the insane world she had been thrown into. Routine and her family, of course. She had been pleased to find Pallas waiting for her. With him by her side this new life wasn't so bad, after all.
As soon as the coffee was ready she had her mug full. She closed her eyes and breathed deep, inhaling the sweet smell of the dark liquid. Walking over to the sofa with her drink in hand she took in the apartment she now called her own. It didn't even look like anyone lived there, to be honest. All her dark clothes were neatly stacked in a box that was now hidden in the small closet, and without the empty mugs that were littered around the apartment one might actually think the apartment was abandoned.
Styx curled up on the sofa, enjoying the few moments of peace. Soon she would have to get dressed and ready for work, but for now just sitting here, all alone and in perfect quiet was more than enough for her. Right here, right now, she was as close to happy as she'd ever been.
