The twenty-first year of my life is full. My teenage years ended with a night terror and pain in a foreign place (and at a foreign time). This year, the most socially awaited by most and the last year that seems to matter for a while, saw its finish under a sunset above rocks around trees ( Read more... )

you should watch the movie series call "7 up". it is a documentary about british school children. there are 7 movies and they are filmed every 7 years (when they are 7, 14, 21 28, 35, and 42). in the first movie, you see how smart children really are. the rest of the movies are super depressing because you see the peoples' dreams go unfullfilled and live the lives that they did not want to necessarily want to lead.

-when we were much younger, Alex and I were walking up suicide hill and i remember seeing some older kids (the sight of teenagers conjuring that particular mix of fear and awe that you get when you're in elementary school) off in the woods, a ways from the trail we were on. something about it was so scary, and i can't remember if we kept going or turned back.

-one of my best memories from three summers ago is our trip to the top of suicide for sunrise.

-in my psychology class over the summer, I read about some different classifications of the ways people shape identities for themselves. one thing that was mentioned was that some people simply turn to their careers to provide them with identity (the particular example given was women becoming homemakers). i've been thinking about this lately, too - I don't want to just fall into using teaching as my sole source of identity and personality.
