Summary: My Muse is history

When I was in the fourth grade, we studied California history. Disney was running a television series called Zorro. I fell in love with Zorro and that period of California history. When my uncle took us to the Disney studio, I got to see the sets. Unfortunately, they were filming on location so I never got to meet Guy Williams. That sparked my interest in history from the non-Anglo perspective.
After I was married, my husband and I visited all twenty-one California missions. The trip took years since we visited most of them on vacations. It was fascinating to see the difference from San Luis Rey de Francia standing on a hill in Oceanside so we got the feel of the Franciscan friars arriving to Santa Barbara called the Queen of the Missions to La Purisima Conception built in a line after a major earthquake since the Native Americans refused to enter a quadrangle to one set way out on an Army base and finally San Francisco Solano above San Francisco. The later missions never got finished since they were secularized before they could be completed.
My interest in California history continued since my father loved Westerns. As a child of 1950s, I watched every Old West television series except Gunsmoke. I fell in love with wide open spaces and people making a new life away from the crowded East coast. I even took a horse trip into the Sierras with my father. We rode into a lush meadow and camped for days. Sleeping under the stars cemented my love of history. These were the same stars that people had seen over one hundred years ago.
