The door slowly slid shut behind as Kira Nerys stepped into the holosuite. Jadzia Dax had asked her to join her in Holosuite Five after the end of her shift. Jadzia was full of surprises and enjoyed sharing them with her fellow officers. Kira had no idea what to expect this time. Jadzia had shown her the wonder of the cosmos from the bridge of a Starfleet vessel, the hidden passages and markets of a bygone Earth and her home world of Trill with her favorite restaurants and the places where she had grown up.
She stood just inside the holosuite and wondered what Jadzia had planned now. She could smell the clear fresh air of planet side In the distance the Janitza Mountains of Bajor, her home world, rose in their pristine beauty and covered in a carpet of green dotted with vivid colors. She could hear bird song and the rushing of water nearby. The Cardassian Occupation had wrecked havoc on Bajor leaving destruction in its wake, It would be years before the reality matched this dream scene.
Jadzia stepped into view. “I heard you talking about Bajor before the Occupation. You must have loved the place.” She moved closely, “Activate Jadzia program 2.” The scene shifted to a valley floor with sheer cliffs towering overhead.
Kira gasped. ”It’s beautiful. I’ve never seen this before.” She took a step forward. Her feet sunk into lush grass as butterflies danced in the air before her.
“I was on the expedition that explored the Janitza Mountains. Each valley had a different ecosystem.” She turned around to point out the meadow that extended into the distance beyond the valley. “This was my favorite. I could spend hours just watching the sky.” She laughed, “Take off your boots.” Kira sat on a rock and removed her boots and sox. Jadzia pulled her into the grass. “Now you can relax and enjoy.”
Kira rolled into her back. The sky was bright and clear. “Thank you for this. I feel like I’m back home on Bajor.”
“The holosuites makes dreams reality. You are welcome to come here whenever you wish.” She smiled at Kira, “This is a small thank you for all the help you gave me in settling in.”
Kira turned around slowly. “Home refreshes me. This will help me cope with all the insanity of my job.” She sighed as her fingers scooped up earth and rolled it into a ball. She tossed the ball at Jadzia. “Catch.”
Jadzia caught the ball. “See, you’re already relaxing.”
“Maybe we can explore together.”
“I’d like that. You can teach me more about Bajor. It seems to be a wondrous place.”
“It was before the Occupation. When it’s restored, I’ll take you on a tour of my favorite places.”
“Unfortunately duty calls. Close Jadzia program 2.” The walls of the holosuite returned as they headed for the exit.
Outside of the holosuite, they headed for the command center. Kira slipped into her seat as Bajoran liaison officer while Jadzia headed for her post
as a Starfleet science officer. The command center was noisy compared to the quiet valley they had left. This was reality in contrast to the quiet dream of the Bajoran valley.
