Summary: A night at Harvelle’s Roadhouse
Harvelle’s Roadhouse was busy. Ash was busy working on his computer. He crossed one request off the list. On to the next one.
Ellen Harvelle was mixing drinks as she answered a question. “No, haven’t seen him since May.” She set a beer in front of the man. “He was heading to New Mexico. Something about a vampire nest.”
“Thanks Ellen. Maybe I’ll head to New Mexico.”
Jo Harvelle walked in carrying a box. “Where should I put it Mom?”
What’s in there?”
“Your vegetable order.”
“Take it to the storeroom and fill the open shelves.”
“Sure.”
In the dark storeroom Jo flipped the light on. After putting the box on the the floor, she slit it open. Taking a knife, she open the smaller boxes and the bags. Soon the shelves were full with tomatoes, eggplants, heads of broccoli and cauliflower, ears of corn and a bin of mushrooms. She cut the radishes off the leaves and tossed them in a bowl. The leaves would go to the compost heap.
Jo headed back inside. “I’m done.“
Ellen looked at her. “Wash the dishes before dinner.”
“Sure Mom. Should I start dinner?”
“Good idea. The hunters will be hungry after a day on the road.”
Once the dishes were finished, Jo worked on dinner. The stew had been simmering since morning. She placed the trays of biscuits on the counter next to the pies. Ice cream was in the freezer. Just another night at the Roadhouse.
