Summary:Wandering in Xanadu.
The wind blew across the plain as Paige swallowed. In the distance, she could see thin spires topping a wall. She took a breath, Where am I? How did I get here? She heard hoof beats and turned to see a rider approaching. “Where am I? Who are you?”
“On the plain outside of Xanadu cousin. I found your horse and came looking. Are you fine?”
“I think so. Thanks for finding me.”
“Mount up. Grandmother was worried when your horse came back alone so I said that I’d find you.”
Grabbing the reins, Paige mounted and realized how different the saddle was from the Western one she was used to. She followed her cousin as they entered the gate and headed for the stable. A groom took her horse as they hurried across the courtyard.
“You need to change. You can’t see Grandmother in a dirty robe. Follow me.”
Paige glanced at herself. Her cousin was right. Dirt and grass covered her robe making her look like she had rolled across the plain. “I didn’t realize how I looked. Thanks for telling me.”
“Come on. You need to wash and change before we enter the court. Follow me.” She led the way down a hallway and into a room. “Rose will help you get ready.”
“Mistress, you look like you were rolling across the plain. Here’s fresh water to wash while I get your formal robe.”
“Thank you,” as Paige headed for the basin. Face washed, she felt better and took off her robe. Rose helped her into a brocaded robe with fur at cuffs and hem. A sash was added.
“Sit please while I do your hair. It’s such a lovely shade of brown.” Her fingers deftly made a braid and added a tie at the end.
Her cousin stepped in, “Perfect. Let’s go. We’re late.”
Paige turned over trying to remember her dream. Her hand brushed her hair triggering what had happened. No more reading Coleridge before bed was her thought. Dreams were fine but she preferred the reality of San Francisco.
