Jason sat in his bedroom with only a candle’s light to see by. The telephone sat by his bed, deafeningly silent, as it had been for days. After a long, heart-wrenching fight between his conservative parents and himself, Jason had left his comfortable home in Rowlett and got onto the one-way flight he had booked just days before. Jason had moved to Los Angeles three weeks prior to live closer to his lover and further away from his family. It had broken his heart to leave things so tattered and torn between himself and his family, but Jason knew where his heart belonged. It was simply waiting for the rest of him to catch up.
Jason cried onto the pillow on which he lay, his tears momentarily relieving the pain. He’d stormed out of his parents’ house with the promise that he would be heading towards something he wanted but the entire rest of the world disapproved of. Now that the earthquake had destroyed more than buildings, Jason wasn’t sure what he wanted. Without thinking, Jason reached over and pressed the button on the answering machine.
"Hey, angel. I’m on my way to the airport to pick you up, but I thought I’d leave you a housewarming gift." Michael chuckled nervously. "anyway, the real reason I was calling was to tell you how much I love you and adore you, and how I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. You are my dream come true, and I don’t know where I’d be right now if you hadn’t come into my life. Jason Castro, will you marr---"
Just then on the tape, there was a rumbling in the background, along with the screeching of tires on the road and a sickening crash entirely too close to the phone. Screams and sirens could be heard in the background, and one sound stood out from the rest of the commotion: a faint, ragged breathing like a heartbeat that seemed to sound Jason’s very name. And then the line went dead.
