Title: For Once I Sang A Tune
Disclaimer: I own nothing.

David burst into the garage, his heart a furious hummingbird in his chest. He leaned on the doorframe to keep from collapsing, his eyes jumping immediately to the source of all the noise.

Three uniformed men stood in their garage, one holding Andrew up to the far wall, his face smashed into the hard cement. David watched in horror as his brother’s hands were handcuffed behind his back. Andrew let out a groan of pain as the officers yanked his wrists backwards, twisting his arm in the process. David, now panicking, ran to his brother’s aid.

"Don’t touch him! He didn’t do anything! Let him go, please! Please!" David screamed at the top of his lungs as he lunged at his brother and tried desperately to pry the men away from Andrew.

"

"Grab him." David didn’t hear the officer give this order, but when the officer snatched his arms and pulled him to the side, David tried to break free.

"Don’t, please!"

"Shut up! Shut up and watch!" The officer gritted his teeth angrily and pinched David’s chin tightly between his thick, callused fingers, twisting his face towards Andrew.

The younger Cook’s face fell into a deeper state of fear as he spotted the firearm in the third officer’s hand.

On the spur of the moment, David sprang from the officer’s grip and ran to Andrew’s aid, ignoring the men shouting at him to give up, that it’s useless. But still David’s hands were wrapped tightly around Andrew’s shoulders, holding him as close as was possible. David closed his eyes and wished them away. When the rough hands grasped his torso and threw him against the opposite wall, David had no choice but to let go. The same officer had him again, more tightly than before. The strong man held David’s wrists behind his back, and David had nowhere to run.

David wasn’t sure, but he could have sworn he heard his younger brother whimper at the sight of the weapon. David was torn. He wanted to save his brother, but fighting any more would just get them both killed. Michael had told them to take care of each other, and David couldn’t help but think that he let his best friends down. Andrew turned his head as far back as he could to sneak a peek at his older brother. David read in Andrew’s face help me, please. I love you, I need you. And David could only look back in defeat as the officer put the gun to Andrew’s temple and pulled the trigger.

End Chapter 5
Step aside, boy," an officer said with a cool voice as he easily pushed David away. "This young man is in violation of Order number 6." The officer gestured to Andrew’s broken guitar on the floor just a few feet away. David’s eyes nearly popped out of their sockets at the sight of the instrument. He dared a look at his brother and almost immediately tears sprang to his eyes. A wave of numbness washed through David’s veins as he processed the words through his head. Order number 6...no, please God…Andrew’s glasses had been cracked and knocked askew. But Andrew’s eyes…David both saw and felt the fear in his brother’s hazel eyes. They looked at each other with a mutual understanding; they knew what the penalty of the law was.
