I am considering using City CarShare or ZipCar (FlexCar doesn't have locations near me). Does anyone have any experience using or opinions about either of this programs ( Read more... )

I know peculiaire asked this exact same question sometime around July... You might ask her, or surf her July-ish entries? I recall that she got some good info there.

I've looked into them too, and I ask you this - though renting a car is obviously more hassle than popping over to pick up a carshare car, I think finding a cheap rental place is certainly cheaper - no monthly rates, and you get the car for 24 hours, instead of paying an hourly rate.

For long trips car rentals might be cheaper but not for just picking up a box a stuff from a friend's house to going out to dinner if you don't want to bike in the rain which is how I think I will use it more often than not.

Zipcar and Flexcar have merged... and I think both going to the zipcar UI.

Doing the rate math, Zipcar came out cheaper for usage for my occasional needs, as well as having more cars available all over than CityCarShare. A friend uses City Car Share mostly because as city employee she gets a discount, but has not seen much of a service difference otherwise.

ZipCar does seem to have more places and it also works in Boston so that is perk as well.
