I agree. I always endeavor to make my fantasy and sci-fi women people who do what they gotta do, but have real feelings and thoughts to motivate them as well. I probably fail at it, though.
I wonder if that isn't a reaction against books like Podkayne of Mars and Friday, and various other SF classics of the Golden Age, in which the cool female character ended up as a happy wife and mother, giving the impression that no matter what their capabilities and passions, in the end what girls want most is to write "Occupation: Housewife" on their Gaian Reach Tax Return.
BTW, I was a bit surprised to notice that you friended me fairly recently (I don't often look at my profile page, so I'm not sure when), and since we don't seem to share any communities or friends in common, I was trying to think of where we might have crossed paths, and coming up dry. If you were curious about The Secret Miracle, I have to warn you that when it comes to fanfic, the amount that I actually write is inversely proportional to the size of my plotbunnies--all of which are giant mutant monsters straight out of Night of the Lepus. Also, I am a lazy shlub and hardly ever update.
