There's a large subset of those who make the complaint (myself included) whose problem is, I think, that the reality of "doing what I want" doesn't jibe with the idea of "doing what I want."

When I had a hardcore, serious go at earning my living acting, I was, in fact, able to bring home a pretty steady (but admittedly very small) income. I was working my ass off, literally making myself sick, for a tiny amount of money. It wasn't that I couldn't make money doing it. It's that, ultimately, I wasn't willing to make the sacrifices necessary (living on a much smaller income, having no life outside of work, constantly battling whatever illness I'd picked up on yesterday's set) in order to actually do it in the real-world of a working actor's life. That experiment lasted only a few weeks before I started submitting resumes for an office job again. The sacrifice of not "doing what I want" was less than that actually doing what I want required ( ... )
