Clark paced around his loft up in the barn nervously, glancing down at his watch.
It was 5:15. Where was she?
He sit next to his old telescope, staring at it for a moment, and then, when he glanced out at the late afternoon sky, his mind slowly started to drift back to the events of a few nights before.
The night of the Spring Formal would be a night Clark wouldn't soon forget.
Whitney had presumably left town to join the Marines, a tornado was about to blow into town, and Clark was at the formal with one of his two best friends. Shockingly, for the first time in years, not one thought of Lana entered his mind the entire night. Well... except for when the dance ended shortly after 10:30. At that time, he wondered if Lana and Whitney were all right, and Chloe assured him that they were probably fine.
Chloe.
Clark's lips turned up into a smile the moment she entered his mind again.
She'd looked so beautiful and so perfect that night. He'd loved spending those few hours with her at the dance. It had seriously been one of the best nights of his life, and he wanted more nights like that.
Everything had been perfect until Chloe had driven him home.
She'd gone in with him to say hello to his mother... who they found on the couch crying her eyes out.
They had both been stunned when she'd told him that his father was missing.
Clark didn't discover until after Chloe left that Roger Nixon was behind Mr. Kent's disappearance.
He searched and searched and searched, and couldn't find his father anywhere.
The following day, he headed out with Chloe and Pete to look for Mr. Kent, and again, nothing.
In the middle of their search, Chloe had pulled Clark off to the side, and had told that for the moment, especially with his father missing, if he wanted, they'd maybe be better off just being friends.
He'd looked more than a little hurt, and tilted his head when he spoke to her. "Chloe... right now's not the time to be talking about this... but as soon as I find my dad, we will talk about it." He'd kissed her cheek then, and saw a flicker of hope in her eyes.
Within twenty-four hours, Mr. Kent was safe, and at home. and all was well.
All was well, except for the tugging in Clark's heart.
He had a decision to make, and he needed to make it soon.
"Clark?"
A soft voice on the stairs jolted him from his thoughts, and he turned his head to see Chloe standing there.
"Hey." He grinned, standing, and she smiled sweetly at him.
"You said you wanted to see me?" she asked, and he nodded.
Lana sighed as she looked at the clock. Ten minutes.
She had ten minutes, and then she could see him again. She was anxious, and could hardly stand the wait.
Saturday night had been memorable for Lana, too.
She'd driven Whitney to the bus station, and told him goodbye, but as he'd started to get on the bus, she'd broken and burst into tears.
Within moments, Whitney had turned and walked away from the bus, and had taken her into his arms.
"I can't leave." he whispered. "Lana, I'm in love with you."
She looked up at him through tears, and never said a word, only kissed him.
"Let's get outta here." he'd said with a small smile.
They saw the storm coming, and had rushed to a hotel where they knew they'd be safe for the night.
They spent the entire night, just talking.
It wasn't until much later that Lana had realized that she was just as in love with Whitney as he was in love with her. She'd started to believe she had feelings for Clark, but she knew for sure now that she didn't. Besides, Clark had Chloe now.
"Chloe... I had probably the most amazing night of my life with you the other night." Clark said softly. "And... I... was wondering if... if you'd like to go out again. If we could..."
"If we could what?" she whispered, her eyes wide. "Clark, are you... are you asking if you can date me?"
A light blush crept onto his pale cheeks, and he nodded shyly.
She beamed, her bright blue eyes lighting up. "Clark Kent... I thought you would never ask."
He grinned again then, stepping toward her and pulling her into a hug.
Tears of joy filled Chloe's eyes, but she held them back, snuggling her head into his chest.
She sighed contentedly as he held her, and only one thought entered her mind.
She knew, without a doubt, that this was only the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
