Regarding gaming, I'm beginning to think it's a bad idea in general to have competitive board games at a "social" gathering. Better to have Taboo and Pandemic and such, and save Race and Dominion for board game clubs.

Probably so, since any social gathering's inevitably going to have people not particularly interested in games as such.
