I love my job - Ireland on short notice

Yesterday I got an email from Rob, the boss in Italy asking if I had any advice or could offer a solution for something that blew up at a site in Ireland. I helped out as best I could. It seems my solution is a winner. This morning Rob pings me on IM and says that they need someone on that site ASAP, how busy am I? I told him that I could be on a ( Read more... )

That is so awesome, to get to fly to Ireland on a few hours notice. The Guinness in Ireland is wonderful - if nothing else, the bartenders there know how to pour a proper pint.

They also have Guinness Cold (or something like that, can't remember the exact name) that is kept in a special keg that is cooled to 4 degrees Celsius colder than regular Guinness is kept at. It seemed like a marketing scam to us, but we met people at bars who swore their allegiance to one or the other.

They are surprisingly good in Italy about pouring the Proper Pint. One of the bartenders (owners) at my favourite pub in Lodi consistently "pours" a shamrock on the top. Although I must say that even a quiet little bar in Schenectady had certificates recognizing them for pouring a perfect pint. I think Guinness put quite a marketing push behind the whole perfect pint thing.

As far as I am concerned the jury is still out as to whether the Guinness there does indeed taste better. Maybe it is a Northern vs. Republic thing. I think I will just have to "research" some more. Same with the Guinness cold. I have seen it both in Scotland and when I was in Ireland. I can't remember if I have tried it or not though but I do imagine there is a big taste difference. A lot of beer taste is affected by temperature. I know there are some lagers that I just cannot drink if they are warm.

It's good to hear from you. You seem to post as infrequently as I do. I hope you had a fantastic honeymoon. I look forward to hearing about your trip.
