Where am I now?

My last update I said that I was headed on short notice to Northern Ireland. I managed to find an Alitalia flight from Milano to Heathrow. This was actually a real challenge as last weekend was a holiday long weekend in Italy. I think the Thursday was officially a day off so everyone took Friday too. This made for really full flights to the UK, I ( Read more... )

Happy Birthday! Is Guinness supposed to taste different?

I can't count the number of people who have said that Guinness tastes better in Ireland. As hockeykris pointed out, part of it could be the "Guinness Extra Cold" that you also find in some places.

BTW You and hockeykris might have played each other in the last year or two.

Oh, I love Guinness as it is, I must try it in Ireland sometime! Have you had Guinness ice cream, it's recently become popular at several Ithaca restaurants.

Hockeykris, where do you play?

That would be so wild if we played each other... I play for the Syracuse Ice Hawks and have occasionally subbed for the Syracuse Blades. Who do you play for? If you live in Ithaca and play for one of their teams, I am sure we have played :)

I think the reason Guinness tasted different to me wasn't because it actually is different, but because of the atmosphere that I was drinking it in. And the Guinness Extra Cold definitely gives it a different taste as well.

Hang on, I did not say anything about locals, I said colleagues. I was with a Boston-Irish guy, his wife and a handful of Austrians.

I was at least hoping to have a nice dinner before having many pints.

My understanding is Guinness tastes the same on both sides of the border (I've only had it in the north).

All the roads suck in Northern Ireland - it's a tiny place but it takes forever to get anywhere!

The in-laws are excited because the road from Belfast to Dublin (they both work all over Ireland) is finally a dual carriageway all the way. I was shocked - I'd just assumed it always had been.

I found that due to the lack of dual carriageways I need to adjust my time estimates for Ireland. In Italy as long as I am on the autostrada I usually have no problem maintaining 80+mph but in Ireland I think I need to revise that down to 50. I too was suprised that Derry to Belfast was not all motorway.
