for willow_reece . she was bummed that dollhouse got cancelled so i am attempting to perk her up a bit. the reason this isn't a dollhouse fic? while i like the show, i didn't like it enough to get into creative writing mode with it. so i went with something else she likes.

"Sneak"

River/Jayne

post-BDM

rating: PG-13 It hints at smut but I ended it so that it's a tease... =)

summary: He knew the puppy was a bad idea.

Sneaking. That's what he was doing. Sneaking around on his owm gorram ship. Ok, so Mal owned Serenity, but this was his home too. And men like Jayne Cobb didn't sneak. Well, sometimes on jobs he needed to. But that was work. He shouldn't have to sneak around his home. But here he was, sneaking none the less.

At the time, around Moony's birthday, the puppy had seemed like a good idea. She'd been as close to normal as she was likely ever to get, so he'd gotten her the mutt as a present. Plus, he knew that it would annoy Mal. Annoying Mal could be fun sometimes. It'd annoy him in two ways. One, cause he didn't want pets on the ship, and also because even if he didn't want the dog aboard, he couldn't say no to River.

She'd turned those big brown eyes on him when he'd started to tell her she couldn't keep it, and that was all she wrote. Mal'd caved and allowed her to keep the thing. And that was what started the trouble.

Oh sure, it weren't trouble for anyone else. Even Mal has gotten used to the pooch now, almost two months later. But it turned out to be trouble for Jayne. And what's worse, everyone else was having a good ol' laugh.

There was no other word for it. Ever since he'd gotten her that pup, she'd been stalking him. Actually stalking him. Poking his head around the entrance to the dining room he holds his breath.

"Relax, Jayne," Kaylee says with a bright smile from her place in Simon's lap. "River's down in the passenger area giving Scruff a bath." Simon leans up and whispers something in her ear and she brings her hand to her mouth, stiffling a giggle.

Jayne stomps up to them and points at Simon. "I can't believe you find this funny, Doc." A sound from down the hall makes him spin towards the engine room. He lets out a sigh as Zoe rounds the corner. She sees the tension in his face and smiles.

"Well, a couple years ago I wouldn't have found it funny," Simon admits, his mouth quirking. "But she's not a child anymore, no matter how much I want to deny it. And the fact that you're not the least bit interested in my sister just makes this hilarious."

Growling, Jayne leaves, heading towards his bunk.

"Just give up Jayne," Zoe calls after him with a laugh.

Muttering to himself he shakes his head and keeps walking. At the opening to the stairwell that leads downstairs, he hears Scruff barking. Good, she's still occupied with the dog. Time to go lay down for a bit 'fore supper he thinks.

His feet hit the deck and he knows instantly he's not alone. A giggle behind him confirms it.

"Look River, spying on me in the shower is one thing. Hell, even you stealing a kiss while I was workin' out I can handle. But Imma draw the line at-"

The sound of Vera cocking chokes the words off before they leave his mouth. Turning around he sees his favorite girl in the hands of the crazy girl.

"Not exactly normal, this is true. But I'm not completely insane anymore either," she says. Taking a step towards him she waves him away from the ladder. "Sane enough to know I owe you thanks for getting me Scruff."

"Well, it was your birthday, so-"

This time it was the sound of Vera's safety being thumbed off that cuts him short.

"Don't stall. Don't argue with the crazy girl with the big gun Jayne." She steps closer and her eyes wander down his body. "Just lay down and let me thank you."
