"Ruttin Sparkles"
River/Jayne
Rating: PG I guess
Setting: Post-BDM
Summary: Even geniuses can sometimes end up liking silly stuff, and Jayne has to deal with it.
"No!" Jayne bellows as he walks through the entrance to the dining room. "One was enough. I ain't readin' no more of that go se."
Running behind him with a book in her hand River sweeps in, all bright eyes and billowy, wild hair. "Please, Jayne? You must read it to me. You promised!"
"Can't do it, Moony," he shoots back. There actually is a little regret in his tone. He doesn't like breaking his word, but he just can't do it. "It's too ruttin silly. Yer too smart for this kinda crap."
"It's not crap!" River stomps her foot and huffs. "Is sweet, and romantic! Tragically so at times." She sweeps around in front of him and looks up with those big brown eyes. And just for good measure, she sticks her lower lip out in a pout that rarely fails to make anyone cave.
"No. The boy's a whiny little...and he sparkles! It just ain't right, River. I'm not readin it anymore. You're a big girl, you read it."
"But, Jayne," she begins, now adding a slight tremble to her pooched-out lip.
"No!" With that he pushes past her and leaves the room.
River hangs her head and lets out a sigh. She doesn't understand his refusal to read to her. It's not that he can't. He in fact reads very well. It's one of her favorite past times, listening to him read aloud when they were alone. "Perhaps a bribe will get him to read it for me."
"No bribe will ever get me to read another one of those books!" The shouted reply comes from the hallway.
A thought occurs to River, and she smiles deviously.
"I know what would work," she whispers to herself. Oh yes, if she knows Jayne -and she does, quite well- then there is something that will most certainly get him to read the next novel in her favorite series to her.
"I'll wear the costume tonight, Jayne," she yells down the hallway.
His head appears in the doorway. "The whole costume? Even the hat? And makeup?"
She nods.
"And the shoes?"
Her face scrunches at the idea, but she relents and nods again.
He walks in and reaches out his hand, "Gimme the gorram book, girl."
River squeals and jumps up on her tip toes to kiss his cheek and hands him the book. Sitting down on the couch in the lounge, she waits for him to sit, then snuggles up to him, laying her head on his shoulder.
Sighing, he looks down at the book and reads the cover.
"Eclipse, by Stephenie Meyer...."
