sunshineali A/N: Though beta'd, any mistakes or suckage are the fault of the author and no one else. This is actually a bit of a follow up to their little adventure with
Animal Crackers, which a few people requested a sequel to. Not really sure I'mhappy with it, but I have been suffering from writer's block for a ludicris amount of time, so I'm just happy I came up with something.
Jayne made his way down to the pool, shades in place, towel slung over his shoulder, and a smile on his face. Their client had been so thrilled with the results of the last job that he’d offered Mal and company a week’s stay at his hotel at no cost to them.
In what Jayne considered one of Mal’s wise moves-and everyone knew those were few and far between- Mal had agreed. ‘Course it might have had something to do with the women folk all looking at him with pleading eyes. Even Zoe had smiled while feeding little Hoban, saying they could use a break. Kaylee and River nuzzling up to him and telling him how much they loved their captain certainly helped. But Jayne was positive the clencher was whatever Inara had whispered in his ear. Mal’s eyes had bugged out, big as dinner plates, and he’d hastily agreed.
So now here they were, all enjoying a vacation for a few days. Even Doc’s managed to loosen up.He resembled a grinning Cheshire cat, with Kaylee perched on his lap, as he half drunkenly sipped at some drink with an umbrella in it.
Zoe had little Hoban in the kiddie pool, splashing and laughing along with him. She’d come alive over the last couple years, her son breathing life into her that everyone had thought vanished when Wash was taken from them. Though he might not ever openly admit it, it did Jayne’s heart good to see Zoe smiling. Though still tough as a cheap steak, she wasn’t as guarded as she’d been years ago. She was now quicker to laugh and joke.
Mal and Inara had opted to go for a walk. Jayne just smirked and grunted, figurin’ he had a pretty good idea what those two were getting up to. They were a little sickening at times with how mushy they were, hell they could even make Doc and Kaylee look positively casual now and then and that was saying something.
Then there was River. Well he didn’t wanna think on her. Truth be told, he was a little aggravated with her. Pissed ,even. A couple weeks ago, while everyone else had been off ship, they’d found themselves in an interesting little situation. Ended up having quite a bit of fun. Since then, though, nothing. She just went about her normal daily routine, with hardly a glance at him.
“Hell with it,” he grumbled to himself, “and hell with her.” He shook his head and laid back on the deck chair, hands behind his head and took in the scenery. So what if the girl didn’t deem him fit to be more than a one-time grapplin’ partner. Suited him just fine. And so what if she’s over to the right a couple a spaces. He could still see her out of the corner of his eye. Oh, sure, now she was looking at him.
“Hell with the whole damn thing,” he said to himself again. There were plenty of women around, and he didn’t need to waste his time worryin’ about her.
River sat a couple chairs away and watched as Jayne laid back, looking at the women around the pool. She felt a flash of annoyance and glared for a few seconds, then shook her head and slowly resumed what she was doing. Within a few minutes she’d finished and looked down at her toes, wiggling them, and admired her work. She laid back, crossed her ankles and reached down for the snacks she’d brought with her, an idea slowly forming in her head.
He was angry with her, and she knew why he was angry. But what he didn’t know, what she hadn’t had a chance to explain, was that Zoe had been keeping an eye on her for the past couple weeks. River was sure Zoe knew. Maybe not exactly what happened, but she knew there was something that had gone on between herself and Jayne. She didn’t want Jayne to get into any trouble, so she’d been avoiding going to him like she’d wanted to.
She continued to lay on the deck chair, and wiggled her toes as she contemplated her course of action. There had to be a way to let him know that she hadn’t been avoiding him out of choice. She suddenly felt a warm spike from him, followed by a red rush of heat. Not anger, not hate, but desire. Lust even. She smiled to herself. Decided now, despite her initial misgivings that she rather liked black polish. Reaching down and grabbing a couple animal crackers her decision made. Adjusting her bathing suit-which had caused her ge ge to sputter until the other women reminded him that she’s grown now- she stood and made her move.
Black polish. She’s wearing black polish on her toes. A flick of his eyes confirm that she also had it on her fingernails. Gorramit. How did she know?. Stupid question. But, what did it mean? Was she letting him know something? Sending him a signal? Had to be. A smile crossed his face slowly. But what if she wasn’t? As he argued with himself as to the meaning, a shadow fell over him. A small, lithe, shadow. He looked up just as something landed in his lap.
Picking it up, he smiled at the animal cracker, then up at her. She smiled back, then gave him a wink. Her back was to the others, so she slid her tongue out between her lips and wiggled it at him, then pulled aside part of her bathing suit and lets him see the animal cracker nestled against her nipple. She slid the top back in place and slowly began to saunter off, back in the direction of the hotel.
Looking around at the others, Jayne was thrilled to realize they’d all been so busy, wrapped up in their own little happy day that no one was paying attention to either himself or River. He grabbed his towel, got up as casually as he could, and followed her.
