Kenshin watched the pair with growing restlessness; a blow from Tomoe, a dodge from Kaoru. Then a straight hit from Kaoru and most often than not a barrier from Tomoe would send their magic astray to its surroundings. Twice now he had to dodge a stray attack that would undoubtedly result in painful injury to him.
There was no way he was getting involved in the fight unless it was imperative to either save Kaoru or Tomoe from death. The behavior these two females had him twitching but he knew better than to judge them with his human standards. They were different, impressively so. The way their eyes shone with their power and the way their limbs seemed to disappear under a straining speed marked them as something inhuman.
This was a real Esper fight. This was the way they challenged each other in order to get the male they desired. It was not that different from others if one thought about it. Now the spilling of blood had diminished but not the savagery. Many used money or distasteful methods in order to get the man or woman they desired… it was much the same.
At the end… everyone had a vengeful, selfish beast inside.
Even him.
He was here, working with Tomoe to take Kaoru away from Enishi, no?
A cry from Tomoe drew his attention and he watched with growing panic as Kaoru’s attack broke through Tomoe’s hurriedly raised barrier and hit her sending the half-woman to her back. The halfling found her footing quickly and took on a defensive stance. However, Kaoru was merely watching from a prudent distance away.
Kenshin couldn’t see Tomoe’s face since her back was to him, but he guessed her to be furious. He had seen that face too frequently these last five minutes.
“Yield,” Kaoru said tersely from where she stood in front of Enishi. Her eyes were cold and unemotional and her hair was free of its bounds. It floated around her slowly.
Tomoe merely chuckled and wiped off something on her face. When she dropped her arm back to her side Kenshin saw the blood. She was badly injured.
“Why, Kaoru? Do you think I have no chance of winning?” mocked Tomoe, her short hair waving around her with the magic surrounding her.
Kaoru’s expression didn’t change, confirming Tomoe’s words.
Tomoe merely shook her head, “One way or the other…I will win Kaoru.” Then the young halfling turned to Kenshin and unfurled a massive, fire-based attack at him.
Kenshin’s eyes widened when he watched the raging fires go towards him. Déjà vu hit him square in the face, memories of having a very similar attack directed at him by Enishi, and his body froze against his will and more than smart assessment of the situation.
Oddly, the fire never reached him and he found himself thrown to the unforgiving ground with a screaming Kaoru on top of him.
