Been a while since I updated - and not due to lack of material.
While I was away at WTF earlier this month, I finally got a response from Amazon. Unfortunately, since it was later than I wanted (I had cancelled the order earlier that week) and since they didn't offer anything except a plea to give them another chance, I didn't think I'd be going back (more on the choice of wording a bit further down).
The following week, my grandfather had some problems and wound up in the hospital. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like he's going to make it, so I made a trip to see him last night. He didn't look that good.
Last weekend was my birthday; I went out Saturday to the local furmeet (was fun) and Sunday to watch a pre-season football game (Argos won, yay), going out for a birthday supper that night. Total gift haul: BD/DVD of Princess and the Frog, $30 Amazon.ca gift certificate (I'm not in any rush to use it), an invite to Google Voice (it arrived on my birthday, nice timing), and a CD of the HTTYD soundtrack (courtesy that pup from Montreal, during WTF).
Decided to get the GV account yesterday, and tested calling this morning. Unfortunately, the GV integration on the Nexus One has trouble dealing with the extra redirect via Alberta. Either it can't tell what phone number to make Google call, or it's trying to call my access number (meaning I'd have to call long distance anyways, so still 15 cents/minute; this is what it looks like, unfortunately). Workaround is to use the web interface to have Google call me back, until they get it fixed to use that.
Won't be using for voicemail on my cell phone either, since it'll likely be 15 cents plus a plan minute to make use of it.
If any Americans out there want to try reaching me, and can call free to Lewiston, I'm willing to give out the GV number. But when the system opens up to Canada properly, I'd be better off getting a new number.
