The hope, brutal though it can be in the end, at least lets me sleep at night.

I know I'm a few days late to the party, but ask the man to lunch! Contrary to popular belief, it is the super grown up approach. Make up some vaguely work related discussion you want to have with him and then suggest you talk over a meal. While there, find out if you and he have shared movie/music/etc tastes, and ask him to one of those events. I know being the asker sucks, but it's how you get things done.
Also, you're entirely too young to be a spinster, young lady. And you don't have enough cats... ;)
