Lack of women in cycling journalism

I'm having trouble expressing it, but it's really bugging me that the current issue of VeloNews was written and photographed entirely by men. The message is that it's a mens magazine for a mens sport. The best article about womens cycling is actually an advertisement for the Exergy Tour. Thank heavens that Evelyn Stevens won Fleche Wallonne Femmes ( Read more... )

Maybe you could propose a monthly round-up of Women's Cycling news? Send them a 1 page sample article?

The tough part would be getting photos with the appropriate rights to publish. (Or maybe not--if you can make connections with others who are attending Women's events and publishing photos on Flickr.)

Their Blog/RSS feed seems to provide quite a bit better coverage of the women's side of the sport. Seems like I see at least one story about Armstrong go by every day. And actual coverage of the women's races and results.

Do they accept un-agented submissions?
Because I really think you should give it a try. Sometimes editors run with what they have rather than what they might want. And other times it's easier to push off a "I wish you had more coverage about X" when getting good coverage would be a struggle.

I would love to! The problem is getting the time (it's perilously close to the 15th, which is payroll) and the money when I pretty much blew my budget going to Belgium. I did get down to Tour de Grove in St. Louis last week - because of a weird situation in which 37 boxes of books needed to be returned to Indianapolis, and I worked a deal where I would take them if my employer paid for gas for the whole trip (Indy being on the way to St. Louis if you go that route). Minneapolis is even farther. But let me see what I can work out.

Where are our teleportation booths???? Not everyone can flit about like B. :-)

PS Do you know who you're hosting, or will that be a last-minute decision by the organizers?
