On May 12, I went down to St. Louis for Missouri Professional Cycling Series. I took a ton of pictures and posted the best 30 or so on my Flickr site. Then I got to looking at them, and figured I had probably gotten some level of photo of every rider there. That became a project, and now there are about 90 photos, and I have found every male pro ( Read more... )

I suppose if I want to see photos of female cyclists, I'll have to take them myself :)

Neat! Great shots. Glad you got an SLR I'm sure it's much more of a pleasure to shoot with than any P&S would be.

Reminds me of a friend's story about a friend of his who started taking photos at hockey games, and now does it professionally. I wouldn't be surprised if you could sell a few of those shots.

Nice camera BTW. From the EXIF data it looks like you're using the 18-55 lens? It's actually probably just about ideal for this sort of thing, since you've always got a ton of light and don't usually need a lot of zoom.

I'm swapping back and forth. In general, I like the 18-55 results better. In general, I like portraits better than group shots. In general, I like screwed up painfaces rather than smiles (see the Faces of Pain subgroup from cyclocross). It means that I'm right on the edge of getting run over and getting riders mad at me. I think I need to learn to use the larger telephoto and get farther away from the riders.

Relatedly, I found one of my photos on Wikipedia this morning. This is not a problem - I view the photos on Flickr as Gifts to the Universe. With few exceptions, they're sized down to about 1200 x 800 - enough for a reasonable 4 x 6, but it's not going to scale up to a poster or professional use off the computer.
