Folks keep saying versions of "Well, the worst it will be is we have to grow our own food" or "I'll have to go to Windsor for prescriptions" or something like that

Demonizing others from afar is easy. Easy to turn them into a monolithic entity and imbuing them with singularity of purpose and hypercompetence.
But before you get completely depressed about a militia, pick a random person out in the most rural, booniest place, and have a family of whose car just hit a deer. They will be helped - people will fall over themselves to help out. And those that would do harm to THEM will be too embarrassed to say or do anything because they will have violated the rule of help and revealed themselves to those in their community.
Perhaps we can have a national conversation of those things we've kept hidden for years and pretended we've left the shadow behind. Or maybe we'll slide down the other side. That's the risk and fear here.
