Cartoon Violence

Muslims are up in arms in Europe over the publishing of cartoons that dare to depict the prophet Muhammad. According to people who know things, it's blasphemy to display the likeness of Muhammad in any form. What's worse is that these cartoons are critical of Islam. So naturally, the next logical step for those who are offended is to threaten to ( Read more... )

here's a guy in New York whose painting of Osama bin Laden as Jesus Christ is on display at the National Black Fine Art Show, but you don't see Christians protesting in the streets, holding signs that say, "Behead those who insult Christianity!"

maybe not for that show, but the gallery that was showing serrano's "piss christ" had to end the exhibition because of attacks on the work, and because the artist, gallery owner, and employees were receiving death threats from christians. and i remember some pastors saying some pretty inflammatory things about the artist and gallery.

now obviously, muslims threatening to kill people over the (not even funny and really stupid) cartoons is as equally as dumb, but religious stupidity is not just limited to the east. of course, we would never see anyone in the media make retarded blanket statements about christianity, but i've read plenty about islam.

To imply that all religions are equally as bad just seems silly to me.

Christian traditions and beliefs are regularly lampooned, and the ACLU attempts to remove all Christian references from public life, but you don't see farmers with pitchforks burning down the ACLU headquarters or murdering judges who rule that the Ten Commandments should be removed. Christianity is the one religion in America that's ok to mock and ridicule.

Though it's completely unacceptable to send death threats to artists of works such as piss christ, that's a far cry from what's happening with radical Islam, like Theo Van Gogh being murdered in broad daylight, or Muslims torching embassies in Syria. Comparing the two reeks of moral relativism.

my eyes just rolled so far back in my head i was afraid they weren't going to come down again. playing the christian persecution card might work in church on sundays but out here in the real world, christians are the vast majority of america and the far-right christians are currently running the government. you're the one who makes regular posts about how islam is a religion of radicals, so it's a little ironic when you say things like "christianity is the one religion in america that's ok to mock and ridicule ( ... )

Speaking of generalizations, you overreach too when you say that I regularly say that Islam as a whole is a religion of radicals, and that I'd have something to say about Clinton. I don't think I've ever written anything specifically about Bill Clinton.

I had a feeling that my reply was going to bring out a harsh response from you, because I've gathered from past comments and posts that you have a huge deal of animosity toward religion in general, but you exceeded my expectations. Bravo.
