fic: Find the Higgs. For us.
Find the Higgs. For us. That was the last thing he ever said to me.
It's been five years since we lost him. Him, Tevan, my mentor. To the world, he was the Tevatron, the particle accelerator at Fermilab. But to me, he was Tevan, my mentor and my friend. He taught me almost everything I needed to know about the world, and then some.
I remember the day they shut him down for good. I had snuck away from my lab to be with him. It was only right. He had been with me since the very beginning and now I had to be with him till the end.
I remember the way the light and life in his eyes dimmed as the physicists extracted the beam for the very last time. The physicists were sad too. How could they not be sad? They had worked on the project for so many years - and now it had all come to an end.
I remember his last words - as clear as the day he said them to me. He told me to take care of myself. To remember his words. To rock the world with scientific discoveries. And to find the Higgs.
The Higgs. That was almost like our quest. Our very purpose. People said we were rivals in the race to find the Higgs. Tevan always laughed at that. We were never rivals. His scientists helped create me - truth be told. I was like an upgrade, an improvement of what he was. He treated me like a sister, someone to care about and love. And I looked up to him as a brother and a mentor. But never lovers. Our relationship never went down that path.
The wounds from his "death" never completely healed. It still hurts when I think of him.
My name is Serenity and I am the "spirit", the "soul" of the Large Hadron Collider.

There is tension in the air. Physicists rush about the room. Data is pouring in from the various detectors.
A collective gasp.
The Higgs Boson has been found.
A cheer erupts. Handshaking. Hugs. Somewhere in the room, someone has opened a bottle of champagne.
I watch all these from the back of the room.
It is bittersweet.
I walk out of the room, out of the building, out into the open.
I look up at the sky. The first snowfall of the year has come.
I close my eyes and whisper, "Tevan, we found the Higgs."

I've not written fic like this in AGES.
so yesterday morning i woke up and my twitterfeed was FLOODED with news that the Tevatron was going to be shut down for good this October. and my two new characters Tevan and Serenity immediately demanded a story. and this is what came out of it.
honestly this was pretty easy to write. since the situation is similar to QE2's retirement - someone dies/goes away for good, and the other one is left behind. so it was just a matter of transferring the situation to different characters.

the LHC & Tevatron belong to CERN and Fermilab respectively.
*don't have the space in my garden to own a hadron collider*
