[sickbay - wait, what? : open]

Mar 09, 2010 16:18

Tina had been having a weird week. Judging by the calls that were coming into sickbay, it was not actually going to get less weird. She'd barely arrived for her shift, and already she was hearing something about Leonard Nimoy being intoxicated on bananas (what?) and Pasha Chekov having fallen into an inexplicable, coma-like sleep ( Read more... )

These recent habits that had formed out of his control had become...troublesome. He had not precisely over-slept into alpha shift (though it had been close), but the fatigue had encroached into his evenings, pushing them further and further back into his free time and personal activities.

It was, in short, unacceptable.

After some internal debate (first over breakfast and a bowl of milk and sugary cereal, then over a lunch of cherry pie), he had finally decided to seek some alternate solution in the face of his own failure to resolve it. Perhaps it involved human physiology, what little he had of it. At first he did not see Leonard, though this wasn't so private a matter as to require him. There were many other qualified individuals here.

As far as Spock was concerned, Tina had suggested that he find a second opinion, and so he was in the process of doing so. He looked around sickbay to see if the man was in the immediate vicinity, and upon not seeing him, his resolved softened a little. "...If you could."

And he shifted his weight to the edge of the biobed again, this time more leaning than sitting. He could see a platter of warm cookies on the far side of the room, inviting, comforting, and sweet. But not in his hands.

Be professional, Tina. No matter how irritating any given Spock gets.

"Of course," Tina said.

She went to check the roster. McCoy wasn't on shift, but he was on call, so she sent him a quick message.

Private to Dr. McCoy -

Commander Spock in sickbay right now. I've evaluated his condition, and he'd like to speak with you, presumably to get a second evaluation. It's not an emergency, but if you're free now, I think he'd appreciate you coming by.

- Nurse Chapel

Message sent, she returned to Spock. "I've sent him a message," she said. "If he's free to join us, I suspect he'll be here soon."

A chime attracted Tina's attention, and she quickly turned back to the console she'd been using to read McCoy's response to her message.

"He's on his way," she confirmed for Spock. "You don't have to wait for him right here if you'd rather not. You can take a seat or something, so long as you're out of the way."

A nod, still somewhat cautious but calmer now that he felt he had a handle on the situation.

His mother, however, had not raised him to be so rude to medical professionals, no matter how he disagreed with the diagnosis. "...thank you for the evaluation and the referral, Nurse." He moved from the biobed to wait by Leonard's office.

Not without taking a cookie (and a napkin) first. It wouldn't do to eat bare-handed and barbaric in public.

Bones headed into the Sickbay, more than a little ticked about having to leave half his lunch uneaten. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Spock hovering near his office door, but he wanted to find out what was going on first.

Bones gave Spock a quick nod, then headed over to see Tina. "What's going on with the patient?" he asked, pulling up the medical record on his datapad.

"He asked for something for headaches, and a stimulant because he's sleeping more often and for longer periods than is usual for him. After asking him some standard questions and reviewing his nutritional intake, I recommended that he get a psychiatric consultation." Tina shrugged. "I know he's half-Vulcan and all, but he fits the profile for depression and anxiety disorders. He disagrees."

She frowned. "Honestly, I think his background and his belief that he can't be suffering from a mood disorder or other mental health problem makes him more at risk, as far as avoiding treatment goes."

Bones frowned. "Spock, well, all Vulcans... they tend to know a lot more about their minds than we do," he admitted crossly, though he gave her a measured look. "You remember how the other one, the one with the beard, how he had something wrong, and they fixed it inside, in a trance/meld thing? Well - let's just say this one's got the same sort of cognizance about his mental state."

Bones recalled the time Spock had taken a few days off and went into a meditative trance to realign everything, and what happened between them afterward. "He can fix himself with meditation, if that's all it is."

The dietary issues worried him, that seemed more physiological than anything else. Lots of sleep too. That was weird. "Blood work all normal?" he asked, looking at the vitals Tina had taken.

"I wouldn't have described him as either 'fixed' or particularly cognizant of his own emotional state, myself," Tina said drily. "But you certainly know this Spock better than I do."

Tina's voice and manner switched back to fully professional mode. "His vitals are all within normal parameters. He's gained some weight since his last physical, and he's obviously got a lot of sugar in his system, but that's all the standard scans picked up."

"I think either of them would have the same reaction to a psych eval," Bones mused, for a brief moment wondering what it would be like to be a fly on the wall of that room, either Spock and a head shrink. Comedy gold, yes.

"Well, I'll talk to him," Bones sighed, giving him another look. He didn't look that much plumper or anything, but the high glucose intake readings looked off the chart. "The sugar, that in of itself can trigger the sleepiness, the headaches... I wonder what insulin levels are supposed to look like in Vulcans." Shit, there was still so much he was learning about them. Looking back at her, he gave her a little smile. "Thanks for calling me. Lemme see what I can do here."

"M'Benga might be able to help you with Vulcan norms," Tina suggested. "Or, you know, he might not. Ah, the thrills of xenobiology!"

She grinned at McCoy and headed off to take care of another patient. She passed Spock on the way. And took note of what he was eating with little surprise.

"Dr. McCoy's ready for you," she said. "And, seriously, you don't need any more cookies."

Spock swallowed the piece he had been nibbling on, and folded the napkin protectively over the uneaten third. "My blood glucose levels are low." He told her as if it would make a difference, jaw set in what counted for a rather moody expression for him. Tucking the leftovers in his pocket, he meandered strode with purpose over to his Leonard.

"...Doctor."

"Commander," he replied, watching as Spock approached,  composing himself. "You wanna talk somewhere private?" he asked, a quick glance over at his office.

A nod. "If it is not too inconvenient for you." Half of his concentration had already wandered to the cookie he had yet to eat in his pocket, and Leonard's office would be an adequate place to finish it, away from prying eyes.

"I got time," he said in mock irritation, opening the door and allowing Spock to enter first. "What's got you so riled up my head nurse wants you to see a psych?" he asked, leaning against his desk.
