I guess what you do at home when you're slightly bored and waiting for someone, you make movie reviews...
so guess what?
First up, the acting. Personally, I think it was the great extras in the movie that really set the mood and did a pretty good job at it. Tom Cruise is ummmmmm... he does alright I guess. Dakota Fanning did a slightly better job and everyone else just seemed a bit too whiny. Picture if whiny anakin skywalker and whiny luke skywalker were in the same movie and you get the same relationship between tom cruise and his son. yup. that's about it.
The script was pre-written in a certain sense and they wanted to update it. It was kind of unfortunate because it was an ok script written by ok screenwriters. The dialogue was kind of neat here and there, but there was a lot that could have been cut out. Everything also seemed to wrap up way too neatly. Signs had a neatly wrapped ending, but it felt like it should have ended that way. This movie was... i don't know how to describe it... it's exactly like a sitcom where everything goes back to normal, except with a longer time span. The one credit i do give their name is that they took the begining and end exactly from the book.
Now time to write about the thing that everyone's mostly interested in seeing this movie for: the action! which... was actually kind of lacking. Yeah, you see people dying, but it's mostly the same stuff that you see in the trailer. After that, it's mostly tom cruise hiding out. There were also many convienient ways that cuise managed to escape while EVERYONE ELSE died. There was also an increased tension between people, but it drags on and becomes kind of boring after a while.
The way the aliens looked was kind of neat. I think pete, cait, breht, and i were talking about giant robots and how tripod legs were completly stupid. well in War, they looked pretty neat (kind of squid like almost). This is also one of those movies that if you watch it in a theatre it becomes a little better because the sound in this movie is really good. like the roar of machinery and the firing of their guns. Nothing to memorable about the soundtrack, though i don't remember there being much music because of the suspense they wanted to keep.
