"So," Danny said with a grin as he stood before the class, bouncing slightly on the balls of his feet. "There's a ball coming up this weekend. We figured there's no better time to work on a little ballroom dancing."
Lola glanced at Danny and smiled slightly; the tango had been on the schedule before the ball had ever been announced, but whatever. "We're going to show you how to tango this week," she said. "Grab your partners, and let's begin." She took Danny's hand and yanked him closer.
"This is a closer dance than any we've done so far -- closer than most other ballroom dances, in fact," she said. "You want to stand close enough with your partner for your torsos to touch. Leaders, put your right hand on the small of your partner's back and hold your left out to the side. Hold your partner's right hand loosely." She waited for Danny to do so before she continued.
"Now you can start the basic steps," Danny said, picking up the lesson. "Walk forward with your left foot, slowly from heel to toe. (Girls, step back with your right, toe to heel.)Then, leaders, step forward with your right foot so that it lands just past where your left is. Try and be smooth with it, guys -- you kind-of want to slink forward, you know?" He demonstrated with Lola. "The tango's a really passionate dance, so you don't want to be too bouncy. Dance into the floor, if that makes sense, and really take control."
"Now you've got the first steps, the next are a bit quicker. Move forward with your left foot quickly, then move to the right side, sliding your right foot out and then bringing your left to meet it. Complete the move with a half-turn, starting with your right foot." He showed them a few times as it was more complicated footwork than they'd done so far. "Once you bring your feet back together, start over. And ladies, you should always be mirroring your partner."
"Got it?" Lola asked, as she turned on the music. "We're going to go through it again, and then I want you to try it."
