Ron was chuffed about how his life was going lately. Auror training was still intense, but he no longer felt completely knackered every night when he went home to his little flat in Hogsmeade. Maybe that meant he would make it through the remaining two years and a couple months of the course. Added to that was the pressure of the holidays. As usual, he'd done his shopping at the last minute and had barely managed to send off gifts in time for people to receive them by Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day he'd gone to the Burrow, also as usual. He had a good time, even letting Auntie Muriel reach up and pinch his cheek after dinner. On Boxing Day he'd left an envelope with a voucher for Eric Munch, the wizard who checked visitors' wands at the entrance to the Ministry of Magic; Eric had always been pleasant to him, and Ron suspected the man didn't get much, if any, Christmas bonus.
A major factor in the recent pleasantness of Ron's life was Eloise Midgen. He and Eloise had been going out casually for about four months, and while it hadn't yet turned into love, he thought that maybe it could. Physically, things hadn't gone beyond serious snogging, but that was okay; he'd purposely held back, not wanting to muck things up. He wasn't sure where he and El were headed, but he was okay with that; he wasn't even 20 yet, so there was no need to plan out his life yet.
Now it was El's 20th birthday, and he was going to take her to the Italian Kitchen, in Diagon Alley, to celebrate. The weather had alternated between rain and drizzle all day, so Ron Floo'd to Eloise's flat to pick her up.
