Traveling by portkey was faster than flying, but the latter didn’t cause dizziness and an upset stomach. At least, Hermione was going to blame the three portkeys for the reason she arrived in Cairns feeling sick. They had left Grimmauld at five in the morning, taking a portkey to Istanbul where they had then taken one to Hong Kong. At Hong Kong, they’d got the last portkey, which had brought them to a small Australian Ministry office in Cairns.
The whole experience had taken less than half an hour, but she felt jetlagged and tired already. The clerk in the office was very friendly, at least, and explained that they would return to London the same way. They just had to give them four hours notice, because it took that long to arrange for travel, so Hermione was glad to hear that it wouldn’t require a lot of paperwork to return.
As they stepped outside, she looked at Harry and Ron, wondering if they regretted coming with her or wished they’d just stayed home living their lives. At least they wouldn't have to be here too long. After she received the owl from Professor McGonagall regarding a meeting on Monday about NEWTs, she had given herself until Sunday to find her parents. If she didn’t by then, she’d go back to London and attend the meeting before returning on her own. She didn’t want to take up too much of the boys’ time, not when they’re just returned from a year away from their friends and, in Ron’s case, family. Besides, if she did find her parents, then it would take them time to make arrangements to return to England, and she hoped to help them, if they'd let her.
“Thank you for coming along,” she said, knowing that their presence would give her the strength she needed to get through this. She didn’t like them to worry about her, after all. She turned her attention to the city around them, feeling lost as to where to start looking. “It’s late afternoon here, so we probably don’t have a lot of time before we’ll need to find somewhere to stay. I guess we can start the search now and see what we can find.”
