Out of everything that had happened in the last year, this particular event was one of the most surprising. Hermione had never expected for their to be a day when she would be seated at a back table in the Leaky Cauldron waiting for Draco Malfoy. She still wasn't exactly sure why she had even agreed to meet him. No, that wasn't true. His letter had arrived during the worst day of her search over the weekend, and she had been intrigued by his proposal despite herself.
Despite all her efforts, there were just some areas of the wizarding world that were unknown to her. The pureblood families didn't allow books to be written that contained any information that the lower classes didn't need to know, and some of the customs and traditions were never put into writing. The idea of having a source into that world of knowledge was worth meeting just about anyone, and Malfoy wasn't as bad as many of his ilk.
Of course, it did annoy her that he somehow knew her well enough to know that knowledge was the price she'd require, not gold or other favors. She knew it was obvious that she liked to learn, but it didn't mean she had to like that she was so easy to predict in that regard. Contrary to his belief, though, she had no intention of meeting him simply to ridicule him for wanting to understand he'd been taught to hate. She found it a positive change that he was actually making an effort, even if part of the reason was to impress his aunt.
Regardless of their reasons, they were meeting today to see if there was a way they'd be able to work together on this project. It took quite a lot these days to make her consider hexing someone, and Malfoy hadn't managed to get a reaction from her since she had slapped him in third year. It just wasn't worth the effort, and she didn't believe that violence solved anything, even if she did take satisfaction in that slap.
Besides curiosity about what exactly Malfoy wanted from her, she was excited about starting her work for Professor McGonagall today. It was just filing and mailing, standard clerical duties, but the pay was good and she'd be working for one of the few people in the world that she truly admired and respected. If she was accepted into the Ministry program, then she'd be working for another. It didn't take away the hurt she felt after the last few days, but it was something to look forward to. She smiled slightly as she kept an eye on the Floo, waiting for Malfoy to arrive so they could get their meeting underway.
