The Great Hall wasn't crowded in between meals. Before lunch was served, the volunteers and students currently residing in the towers would make their way to the tables, but, otherwise, it was a relatively quiet place to spend time without being alone. At least, that's what Hermione had deduced during the past couple of weeks. Like any hypothesis, of course, there were unknown variables to consider. Now that a lot of the general rebuilding had been accomplished, for instance, there wasn't as much for some of the students to do, especially if they didn't want to spend time outdoors or polishing trophies.
Since she hadn't actually arrived early enough to spend time in the library or the Great Hall during her past few visits to Hogwarts, it was a surprise to find a couple of smaller groups at various tables. Still, it wasn't as silent as the library, so it would suit her today. There were times when she wanted to avoid people and welcomed the escape into stacks of books and quiet solitude. True, those times tended to happen more often than the others, but sometimes she wanted to be amongst people, even if she wasn't included in their conversations.
After running a couple of errands that morning, she had decided to go to Hogwarts instead of returning home. She had helped in the Astronomy Tower for about an hour before she washed up and had a talk with Myrtle, hearing all sorts of gossip and complaints. Once Myrtle had wandered off, Hermione had gone to speak to Madam Pince regarding the proposed meeting for her revision group.
Instead of staying in the library to read, she had come to the Great Hall to get a few things done before lunch was served. If she happened to see anyone she knew, she wasn't so focused that she'd mind stopping. If she had been, she'd have found a quiet table after speaking to Pince, after all.
