Harry hadn't got up this early in ... god, ever.
It was one thing not to be able to sleep, which happened often enough, but it was quite another to purposely get up at four in the morning. Groggily, he rubbed at his eyes and stepped under the shower stream, feeling cold water beating on his back and wondering briefly if this plan of his had been a good one. He'd wanted to be up before Hermione; it would be hard to surprise her otherwise. Surprising Hermione was no mean feat. He just hoped four in the morning was early enough. The plan had been three, but he'd just not been able to manage it.
Of course, as she'd thought Saturday's birthday celebration had been too much trouble, she might turn him right back out of her room for this one, so it might all be moot anyway. Today was her actual birthday, though, and she was nuts if she thought that the celebrating had ended on Saturday.
The shower was quick, and Harry pulled on his clothes before heading down to the kitchen. He wasn't above plying with hot coffee -- besides, he rather needed it himself. Kreacher wasn't in the kitchen when he arrived, which was almost validating -- even house-elves didn't wake up this early, apparently. He made two cups of coffee and went to the cupboard to remove the crumpets he'd attempted to make late last night. They'd been alright, when he'd tried one -- bit lumpy, but what did he know about baking?
After packing the crumpets, some fruit, and some juice into a bucket, he picked up the cups of coffee and headed upstairs. Hermione was still sleeping on the fifth floor until the house was redecorated, but he didn't want to Apparate lest he wake her up prematurely.
When he reached her room, right across from his, he saw the light on. Had it been on before? "Bugger," he muttered softly. She was already awake. Shaking his head, he tapped on her door.
"Hermione."
