It was difficult to believe that 1998 was nearly finished. The year had gone quickly, with memories to cherish and things better forgotten. Hermione wished that it was as easy as that to forget, but it wasn't difficult to focus on the good instead of the bad, especially on a night like this. They had survived, after all. They'd survived months on the run, torture, loss, a war, restlessness, Greyback, her parents, and more. It was that that she focused on as she got ready.

Alicia was having a party, which meant wearing something nicer than jeans and a T-shirt. Hermione had never been to a New Year's Eve party, but she'd seen them on the telly. She doubted that Alicia would have anything formal and fancy without indicating that on her invitations, but she did figure that people would dress better than casual every day clothes. She had decided to wear a simple dress that wasn't dressy but also wasn't something she'd wear out to the pub with friends. It was a dark green knee length dress with sleeves that covered her scar but didn't go all the way to her wrists.

Once she was dressed and had her stockings on, she looked in the mirror and decided that she looked okay. The dress was flattering, as were most that she had bought during that shopping trip with her mum, but it was simple and suited her more than some she had got that day. She checked her stockings to make sure they didn't have any ladders in them and then slipped on her shoes. The locket that Harry had given her was visible with the cut of the collar, and that was her only jewelry. She was leaving her hair down, so she ran her brush through it one last time before she got her coat and handbag.

There were still a couple of hours before the party started, so she wasn't really in any hurry. She and Harry were planning to get Chinese take-away for dinner, though, and she wanted enough time to get food and eat without having to rush or anything. It was going to be nice to start the evening off with Chinese and conversation, though she would have to be careful around Dodger so that her stockings didn't get ruined.

As she walked downstairs, she tried to remember where they had been last year on this day. They hadn't even know that it was the new year until a few days after when they'd seen the date on a newspaper. She couldn't think of where they'd been, just camping and on the run. Thank God this year was different. Better. Even with the bad things that had happened last year, she was glad that they'd survived to welcome in a new year.
