One never felt older, Griselda mused, than when they sat in front of countless young people, year after year, that never seemed to age. And between her work for the Wizarding Examination Authority and the Wizengamot, she had sat before more than she cared to count in her one-hundred and seventy-seven years. She'd presided over the N.E.W.T.s of Albus Dumbledore, himself, and it never changed.
Lifting a hand, she toyed with the gold chain hanging from her spectacles as she listened to Draco give his account of how he'd spent the last year and, more importantly for him, how he hadn't spent it. She'd been in this profession for more than long enough to get the measure of a person from just a look. Young Mr. Malfoy, whatever her more cautious opinions of his father were, and that was another hearing for another time, sat before her looking reasonably contrite. More importantly, he seemed truthful, and what she was hearing from him now seemed to coincide in spots with what documentation and information they had been able to gather from other sources.
She'd been fooled before, of course -- once or twice -- but the boy's confession to Minister Shacklebolt had gone a long way towards establishing good faith and a willingness to work within whatever constraints the Ministry provided for him. However, before a decision could be made, there were final matters to attend to.
As the pale boy fell silent, his testimony completed, Griselda tipped her spectacles down and studied his expression a moment. "That will do, for the present," she said briskly, and glanced down at the witness list she had been given part of the way through the proceedings.
"It is my understanding that several witnesses are on hand to speak for the defendant?" She glanced around the courtroom, raking her eyes over everyone in attendance. "We shall adjourn for a short recess, after which I will hear whatever testimony they can provide."
