Cho stood with her hands on her hips as she looked around her new flat with a sense of accomplishment. There were boxes stacked everywhere, still needing to be unpacked, but the place was already feeling like home. This would be her first time living alone and it was an exciting prospect.
Once her application for Healer training had been sent off to St. Mungo’s, the time had seemed right to move forward with other decisions. First on the agenda, she wanted to find a place she could call her own. She had spent an entire day looking at available housing in Hogsmeade and felt good about her decision to lease a flat at 47 South Vinewood. She liked the building and its location, which wasn’t far from the house on Hornbeam Court she had shared with Katie and Millie. She would need to owl both girls about her return to Hogsmeade and find out where they were now.
After signing the lease and paying the deposit and rent, she was told she could move her things now rather than waiting until the first of the month. Given her impatience to get settled, she was happy to take advantage of the offer. When faced with deciding which unit to rent, a flat on the third floor was the obvious choice. Maybe it was due to all the time spent residing in the upper section of the Ravenclaw tower or flying high over the Quidditch pitch, but she had always enjoyed that feeling of being higher off the ground. So, Flat 3A it was. Home.
She started writing down the things she would still need to set up house, and the list just kept growing. Fortunately, she had chosen the furnished option for the flat which did make the move a little easier but there were so many things she hadn’t even considered. Maybe she could bring a few items from her parents’ house. She had promised them she would return to Glasgow on Saturday for a family dinner and she planned to collect her remaining clothes and books then. After that, a shopping trip or two should take care of the rest.
She walked over to the front window to look outside at the rain clouds gathering. She knew this was a moment to remember. After years of sharing living space with her parents, dorm-mates, and most recently roommates, she was at a turning point in her life where she would be living alone. That sounded so ... adult. She smiled a bit wistfully as she recalled the adage, Be careful what you wish for. She caught sight of her reflection in the window and had to laugh at herself. No, she was pretty certain she hadn’t earned the title of ‘adult’ just yet. For one thing, an adult wouldn’t be feeling the urge to run around the place excitedly like a child.
She tried to make a serious face at the window but couldn’t get the silly grin off her face. She abruptly turned around and took off running through the rooms of the small flat she now called home. When she entered the bedroom, she took a flying dive onto the bed to land on her back. She looked up at the ceiling and blinked a few times before she realized she was staring at a stain from water damage above her bed. She started laughing as she thought an adult would definitely have noticed that earlier. This was positive proof she wasn’t one. Yet.
She used her wand to cast a quick sealant charm on the ceiling when she heard rain begin to fall outside. She lay on her bed watching the misty rain through the window and started smiling again. Nothing could dampen her spirits today.
