Life had been flowing pretty easily lately for Terry Boot. It was June now, though he didn't really know how it had become summer (meteorologically if not astronomically) already. Where had the time gone? He realised he'd been mostly floating along the past month or so. Maybe that wasn't such a bad thing, really; a year ago he'd been a bit of a mess still, his mental and emotional scars healing much more slowly than the physical ones. Now, a year later, he was done with school, had passed his NEWTs fairly well, and was living with one of his best mates and another bloke he'd never thought could turn out to be a decent human being, much less a genuinely guy.
And then there was Lisa. Terry still found himself shaking his head sometimes, wondering how he and Lisa had jumped, about four months ago, from best friends to something more. He supposed he ought to admit at some point that, yes, Lisa was his girlfriend. But that almost seemed like the wrong word. She was much more than a friend now, but given the way his relationship with Katie had gone and eventually ended, maybe it was better if he and Lisa didn't use words like boyfriend and girlfriend. That terminology seemed to come with expectations he wasn't sure he could handle yet. It was better just to be together and enjoy each other and not worry about what it all meant, or whether it meant anything at all.
Those were the sort of thoughts running through Terry's mind as he chopped some vegetables and set a pan on the cooker this Saturday evening, waiting for Lisa to arrive for dinner. He was making a stir-fry, something he'd learned in Wayne Hopkins' cooking class, and he cut up a lot of meat and a lot of veg in case Mikey and Greg decided they wanted to join them for dinner. He'd told them they were welcome, but he wasn't sure what their plans were for the evening. It was such a nice day he was sure he and Lisa would probably take advantage of the good weather once they were done eating.
