Konban-wa, Nipponophile friend here...

The icon is katakana, the one of Japan's syllabic writing systems used to represent foreign words and loan words (among many other things). By "syllabic", I mean that each character represents an entire syllable, not just a single phoneme.

Syllable by syllable, the text should be transliterated "a-ru-ma-ji-ro"; as a full word, "arumajiro".
