I think you would really enjoy A Fire Upon the Deep; it has some really neat ideas about personal identity, culture and language, and it's very well written. The scenery is cool, too.
Contact bored me to death, but who knows, I might enjoy it more today, though I doubt it. Nothing ever really... happens. Pacing problems galore, IMO.
