Fanfiction: my experiences and thoughts

I've got to start off by saying that, as a general rule, I don't like fanfiction. There was a time in my life (middle school, to be precise) when I read, and even wrote fanfics. No, they are not archived anywhere and yes, they were truly, truly awful. But that isn't the point ( Read more... )

As soon as you started talking about the whole extreme-removed-AU thing I was immediately thinking about Arabian Nights. I actually just reread that yesterday, strangely enough. But yeah, it might as well be original work, with how totally unlike the source universe it is. And it's good enough to be.

Haha, after I found out that Arabian Nights was a fanfic, I felt morbidly compelled to read the wikipedia page for the source material, and as I read down I found myself wondering exactly what part of the series, other than character names, the author was using. And I agree, it was fantastic.

I knew it was a fanfic going in, but the rec was like no, seriously, it doesn't matter. From what I gleaned through my own wiki-surfing, I'm pretty sure absolutely nothing is the same other than the names and the physical appearances of the main characters (especially that whole bit with Doyle's cheek, because the actor really does have a broken/rebuilt cheekbone).
