Characters: Morty and Falkner

What had happened to put off this not-date for so long? Not much, actually. A lot of “not much.” Falkner was busy with Wailmer; it was still a baby no matter how much its mother trained it. Morty had become busy preparing the Haunted House with Fantina. Closing down the gym for the event had pushed back a lot of gym challenges that piled up and spilled over on Morty the week after the gym reopened. And after that - well, he had been losing a lot of time to more gym challenges and sleep.
Winter weather was no kinder to him than summer weather was. It made him (stupidly) tired. Imagine! Morty going to sleep at a decent time! But still waking up at an ungodly hour in the afternoon! There was such a thing as too much sleep. Thus, winter sucked and just needed to get out of his life.
But those were excuses. Excuses that could be put aside now that he was walking alongside Falkner into the small building that separated Ecruteak City from the path to the Bell Tower. Morty wrapped his jacket tighter around his body, minding the small package that was tucked away in one of the deeper pockets. He led the younger gym leader down the short hallway and finally held the door open when they reached it.
“Here we are,” Morty was grateful that the trees seemed to keep their autumn colors year-round (though the colors definitely got more vibrant during the fall), otherwise this trip would have been a serious failure. They still stood tall despite the colder bite in the air, aflame with oranges, yellows, and red. The same colors stretched across the walkway as leaves crunched beneath the not-couple's feet. “What do you think?”
